Tips for a Germ-free Dining Room

Published on Saturday, 02 January 2010

If you are one of the people who loves to eat, your favourite place in your home maybe the dining room. Dining room is not just an area solely for eating; we also use this for gathering and a place for conversation after eating. Especially if you are frequently entertaining visitors, your dining room should be inviting and totally germ free.

It's easy to say that your dining room is germ-free but how sure are you that no unwanted particles are mixed in your food whilst you were eating in your dining room. If you think that no visible dust or dirt is clean, you're in for a big surprise, it doesn't mean that it's germ-free.

So how do we make sure that our dining room is germ-free?

Remove unnecessary things

The dining must be spacious, that people can move around freely. You want your dining room to be inviting and comfortable to eat in. If there are things that you might think is not suited and needed in the dining room, remove it.

How do we sort it out? First, take a look at your furniture. Bulky furniture that might somehow make your dining table small is out of the picture. Unnecessary furniture that might just collect dusts and germs should also be removed.

Second, remove assorted things. If you use your dining room as a storage room for a lot of things like toys, newspaper, etc., it should be stopped. It only adds to the dirt and clutter in your dining room. Put it some place or store it appropriately.

Regular Cleaning

What are the things that should be regularly cleaned in the dining room?

Dining Table

The dining table should always be free of dirt, a piece of rice or green peas left lying in the table is not a good thing. Always wipe it clean before and after you eat. You can use a clean towel or cloth in wiping together with soap and water or you may also use some cleaning products. If your dining table has a glass atop, you may use a wet newspaper in cleaning the glass. If the table is made of wood, you can use a cleaning product that is specifically used for cleaning wood.

Spills from a candle or foods must be thoroughly removed. It's better if right after the spill, you clean it immediately so as not soaked it thoroughly in the wood or the tablecloth. If it is a candle spill don't move the candle and don't try to remove the wax until it cooled and harden.

Tablecloth
If you are using tablecloth in your dining table, it's better to use plastic one. This will help minimise soaking of spills in the cloth and it's easy to clean. But if it is plain table cloth, don't wait for the cloth to be so dirty before you wash it. If there are spills wash it immediately and prevent the germs from spreading and growing.

Curtains and Windows
Regularly wash the curtains and don't let it accumulate dust or you may air it out daily. Windows should also be dust-free to prevent it from mixing with food.

Furniture and Figurines
Wipe and clean the furniture daily in your dining room such as chairs, cabinets and drawers and also the figurines together with frames decorating your dining room. Chandelier and fans should always be spotless.

Having a germ-free dining room is one way of healthy lifestyle.
