Removing Mildew to Save Yourself and Your House

Published on Sunday, 11 October 2009

Mildew does not only bring ugly stains and foul odors. It also destroys your house and brings health hazards to your whole household. That is why getting rid of mildew is really urgent.   Favorable Conditions for Mildew   Temperatures between 41 and 99 degrees Fahrenheit is just about the perfect breeding and living temperature for mildew. But the temperature really cannot be fully controlled so it's best that you concentrate on controlling moisture and mildew food instead.   Mildew dwells in the moistest places in your house. In turn, it also feeds on its host especially when it is dirty.   Basements and Bathrooms   Basements are usually damp, hence the abundance of mildew. To avoid formation of mildew, you have to seal insulation on walls and make sure that drainages are working properly. Use a dehumidifier to get rid of excess moisture in the air as well.   Bathrooms are good breeding places for mildew as well. But the good thing is it's easier to get rid of them there. You can simply use commercial tile and tub cleaners to clean the area. Then to prevent them from coming back, make sure that you provide enough ventilation after shower. To dry everything faster, you can use the exhaust fan, spread the shower curtain out and simply open the window. Use mold inhibitors on the surface to protect the area better.     Wood, Fabric and Paper   Fabrics, paper and wood are also candidate hosts for mildew so you should keep them and their surrounding areas clean and dry. Use vacuum to clean them and do not re-use any of the bags to prevent mildew from forming and coming back. Use a hair dryer or a space heater to dry everything sooner.   By eliminating dirt and moisture, you prevent mildew from forming and from coming back.
