Keeping White Couch White

Published on Sunday, 27 December 2009

A white couch at home magically turns a house brighter, bigger, and gives a homey feel to everyone. But there is a trade-off; white couch often requires a lot of maintenance whatever is the fabric. Grime and dirt appears easily and is more challenging to brush off.  It's either you have to clean it religiously or hire professionals to do the job.

When left unclean, it becomes a breeding ground for dust mites, dust, and other foreign organisms that could harm you and your kids.  It also becomes impossible for you to clean the stain that could have just been dirt a long time ago.

Tips in maintaining a white couch clean

Know the fabric first. Different fabrics require different cleaning products.  You must follow this or else, you can cause irreparable damage to your couch.  Set a surface cleaning schedule.  Surface cleaning avoids the chances of dirt turning into stain and for hygienic purposes; you would want to remove crumbs and dirt. You might want to foam a part of the couch and remove just the foam which has picked up the dirt.

Another helpful tip is to set some rules.  An example would be to restrict eating on the couch.  Food is the main source of dirt on couches.  Refrain from letting the pets sit on the couch and take shoes off when about to sit to avoid staining the base of the couch.

The easiest way to keep a white couch clean is by using a hand vacuum to remove crumbs and dirt right away to avoid settling.  When liquid is spilled, react to it quickly.  Use an absorbent cloth like chamois.  Do not rub; blot the cloth on the wet area before it seeps through the fabric.  Once the couch gets soiled, try using a mild soap to work on the stain.  Don't forget to try it on a hidden area first.

When nothing seems to take out the stain, it's a wise decision to just call professional cleaners since they have the tools and training to take care of couches.  It's still the best solution than doing trial and error on your white couch where you spent so much on.
