How To Remove Stains From A Leather Sofa

Published on Saturday, 29 August 2009

Leather sofas require their own kind of care and attention. Here we describe some of the common ways to remove stains from a leather sofa.   Spillage   If there is a fluid spill on your leather sofa you need to blot out the stain immediately. Using an absorbent cloth helps accomplish this. Many people make the mistake of rubbing the sofa surface but this tends to spread the stain even more and damage the surface of the leather. If you do not have an absorbent cloth nearby, simply use a thick and soft pair of socks and fill them with salt. Close the sock opening and use that to absorb the fluid off the sofa.   Blotting stains   Once the excess fluid has been removed, the next step is to blot out the stain. Use a blotting paper for this and do not rub the stain on the sofa. Use lukewarm water to blot the stain further and then finally dry the surface using a dry and clean towel.   Oil stains   Oil stains are another common cause of stains on leather sofas. You need to use a tissue to blot away all the excess oil from the sofa. Never use damp or wet cloths for grease or oil stains as this can worsen the condition further. If you are not able to clean the stain by yourself, hire professional help. There are plenty of professional sofa cleaners, who do the job.   Washing the sofa   Washing your leather sofa is a good idea once in a while to remove all dust and grime from the surface. Make sure to remove cushions and then follow up with a dry dusting on the surface. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean up dirt from the crevices of the sofa. Proceed to use a damp cloth to rub all excess dirt from the sofa surface. Finally, finish off by using a dry clean soft cloth to remove water remnants.
