How to Clean Old Lines and Make them Look Fabulous?

Published on Saturday, 12 September 2009

Perhaps your grandmamma has many linens just waiting to be resurrected inside that linen box. You surely can't let go of those linens especially if they have fabulous embroidery that you can almost think of where these linens will perfectly fit.

But there is one problem-these linens have vintage odor, color, and dirt. How can you ever use these on your table if they are so messy? Don't worry about that because the following steps will rescue your vintage linens.

1.     Think first if you really know how to clean the linens. If not, you should separate those linens with sentimental or historical value. Ask a professional conservator first before doing any cleaning for these linens.
2.     Dry cleaning is not a good idea, though. This process uses strong chemicals that might just ruin your precious linens.
3.     Assess the linens by holding them up against a light source. This way, stains, holes, and other damages can be seen well.
4.     If the linens have holes, better do the sewing first before cleaning it.
5.     Choose the container where you will wash the linens in. Your washing machine is the best choice for sturdy linens. But more fragile and older linens should be washed by hand. Use a plastic container instead of metal for this. Soaps might react with the metal, thus, might probably leave rust stains on the linens.
6.     Use only the mildest detergent you can have from the market. You may also try using a fabric conditioner for the old linens.
7.     Rinse the linens thoroughly. Linens are mostly sensitive to chemicals. Your only way to protect them after washing is through rinsing them carefully.

Just follow these tips and you'll see, those old almost-garbage linens will look like brand new again.
